A senior college professor has shot himself to protest Trump.

College of Southern Nevada sociology professor Mark J. Bird shot himself on campus last month. The professor was found bleeding on campus from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his arm on Aug. 28. A .22-caliber pistol was found nearby on school property.

A police report details that “Bird said he had shot himself in protest of President Donald Trump” and was staggering around the campus bleeding, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. There was no elaboration in the report.

Bird had been a faculty member at the college since 1993.

The professor’s actions have spooked students at the small liberal arts college. According to Robert Manis, president of the college’s faculty union, speaking to the Review-Journal in an interview:

“When you don’t give the full details, then rumors go crazy. It’s unfortunate because it made the students and faculty very afraid and allowed rumors to proliferate.”

Professor Bird is being charged with discharging a gun and possessing a dangerous weapon on school property and carrying a weapon without a permit.
