While departing the White House Wednesday morning, President Donald Trump defended his pick for the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh, and his family after accusations of sexual misconduct from 36 years ago were raised against the Judge.

Trump said that the controversial handling of the allegations by Democrats were “hurting” Kavanaugh’s family: “They are hurting somebody’s life very badly. It’s very unfair, I think, Justice Kavanaugh has been treated very, very tough and his family, I think it’s a very unfair thing what’s going on,” Trump said.

Kavanaugh has been married to Ashley Estes Kavanaugh for 15 years and has two young daughters.

Trump noted that he believes Kavanaugh and his family are being treated very unfairly. “This is a very tough thing for him and his family and we want to get it over with but at the same time we want to give tremendous amounts of time,” Trump said. Trump called Kavanaugh an “extraordinary man” who has an “unblemished record.”

Trump ruled out the FBI getting involved in the investigation, saying he would like to “let the senators take their course.”

Trump said it would be “unfortunate” if Kavanaugh’s accuser did not show up to a special Senate hearing planned for Monday. “If she shows up, that would be wonderful. If she doesn’t show up, that would be unfortunate.” According to the accuser’s lawyer, she will not be testifying.
