Former FBI Director James Comey donated to a Democratic Congressional candidate who is trying to unseat incumbent Republican Rep. Barbara Comstock in Virginia’s 10th congressional district back in September.
Comey donated $2,700, the maximum allowable contribution, to Democratic nominee Jennifer Wexton in September, according to Federal Election Commission filings.
His wife, Patrice, also donated the same amount to Wexton at the end of August.
FiveThirtyEight has Wexton leading Comstock in the polls by six points as of last Friday. Hillary Clinton won this district in the 2016 presidential election 52 percent to 42 percent, while Comstock won that election with 53 percent of the vote that year. One of the proudest things I’ve done in the state Senate is recognize and fund the Burial Ground for the Enslaved at Belmont in the Code of Virginia. Today I joined the annual wreath laying ceremony and celebrated the work of Pastor Michelle Thomas and the @CenterLoudoun! #VA10 pic.twitter.com/I6z6pTiOZy

He has previously contributed to both John McCain’s and Mitt Romney’s presidential campaigns back in 2008 and 2012. Despite his previous donations to Republican candidates, Comey announced he left the party in an interview with ABC News, “I see the Republican Party, as near as I can tell, reflects now entirely Donald Trump’s values. It doesn’t reflect values at all. It’s transactional, it’s ego-driven, it’s in service to his ego.”
