Herman Cain told The Daily Caller on Tuesday that he believes that the accusations of infidelity against him and Newt Gingrich have made Americans wake up and learn about dirty politics.

TheDC asked Cain on Wednesday, at his State of the Union event in Washington, D.C., why he thought his poll numbers suffered after he was accused of infidelity, yet Newt Gingrich’s poll numbers surged after he was accused of infidelity.

“Because the false attacks against me came early in the process,” the former GOP candidate replied. “The American people are waking up to dirty, gutter politics.

Cain also said that he believed the attacks on Gingrich, which came days before the South Carolina primaries, were “carefully timed” and backfired.

“The American voters are saying, ‘We ain’t stupid.’ They know it was well timed and planned and people are waking up to the dirty side of politics,” Cain said. “They hadn’t awaken totally to the dirty negative side of politics when I was first attacked, but I happen to believe that people are waking up.”
