Former Obama advisor David Axelrod says the Tea Party is “fundamentally anti-government, populist in its notions, and this is a direct appeal to that group that is very anti-Washington.”

Axelrod, appearing on CNN’s “The Lead” with Jake Tapper Tuesday, commented on Ben Carson’s new campaign advertisement where Carson argued, “This country was designed around ‘we, the people.’ Of, for and by the people. We need a government that actually understands that and doesn’t think that it is the ruler.”(RELATED: Ben Carson Now Leads Republican Race Nationwide)

Axelrod explained Carson already “has command of one-half of the right wing of the Republican Party and those are social conservatives. And he has — he’s had a base with that group for years because of his writings. He is now going after the populous Tea Party base that is fundamentally anti-government, populist in its notions, and this is a direct appeal to that group that is very anti-Washington.”
