South Dakota Republican Gov. Dennis Daugaard vetoed a bill Tuesday that would have required students in the state to use the bathroom of the gender they were born with.

The law, HB 1008, was widely expected to be signed by the Daugaard. In his statement vetoing the law he said it, “does not address any pressing issue” affecting schools or students.

He continued to say, “as policymakers in South Dakota, we often recite that the best government is the government closest to the people. Local school districts can, and have, made necessary restroom and locker room accommodations that serve the best interests of all students, regardless of biological sex or gender identity.”
