Jonathan Alter told MSNBC’s Ali Velshi Tuesday that President Trump’s remarks at the Holocaust Memorial Museum’s National Days of Remembrance ceremony was “probably the best speech that” he “has ever given.”

“Well, this was a very good speech,” The Daily Beast columnist explained. “He said something that needed to be said.”

“It’s important to hear these words from an American president,” he continued. “I think they help in the fight against Holocaust deniers, and there are quite a number of Donald Trump supporters around the world and nationalist movements abroad and here at home who are, if not Holocaust deniers, anti-Semites.” (RELATED: Trump Promises To Combat Anti-Semitism During Holocaust Week Of Remembrance)

“Jewish reporters, including myself, hear from these people all the time.”

Alter added that Trump’s speech “does begin to put these problems behind him, first with the statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day where he did not mention Jews, instead of apologizing for it they doubled down… then, at a press conference where he bit the head off a Hasidic reporter.”

He had dug himself into a hole on this, and I think he began to dig himself out today.”
