I’m a big fan of television and movies, and I might have found a hidden gem in Netflix’s new show “Ozark.”
We’re currently living in the golden age of television. Anybody can find a great show for in any genre. HBO alone is currently crushing it with “Game of Thrones,” “Silicon Valley” and “Veep.”
It’s becoming increasingly harder to stand out as a great show when so many networks are producing so much great content. However, the Jason Bateman-led show “Ozark” is truly an incredible accomplishment.
The plot of the show, according to Netflix, is, “The Byrdes, husband and wife Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy (Laura Linney), their teenage kids Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz) and Jonah (Skylar Gaertner) — are for all intents and purposes an ordinary family. Ordinary save for Marty’s job: The top money launderer for the second largest drug cartel in Mexico.”
I finished the series last night, while having a few Coronas to get in the spirit of a drug cartel drama, and the final 15 minutes of the season is nothing short of incredible television. The series is one of the most dark and twisted family dramas I’ve ever seen, and yet, I couldn’t peel my eyes away from the television.
Bateman managed to portray himself as a loving father, vicious businessman and completely unaware of his surroundings at times. The 10-episode series never slows down. Bateman’s performance could possibly be the best of his lifetime.
The show also does a great job of portraying the depressed parts of America, which have come under much more scrutiny since Donald Trump won the election.
I’m an extremely hard person to impress when it comes to my entertainment choices. Some might say I’m the greatest and harshest critic to ever live. Having said that, I think you’re a moron if you’re choosing not to watch “Ozark.”
P.S.: The mind-blowing moment near the end of episode 10 is one of my favorite in the history of television.
