Medical marijuana should be taken off the NBA league’s banned substance list, former NBA commissioner David Stern said during an interview Wednesday with retired basketball player Al Harrington.

“I think [medical marijuana] probably should be removed from the ban list,” Stern said in a documentary produced by UNINTERRUPTED. “I think there is universal agreement that marijuana for medical purposes should be completely legal.”

Stern acknowledged many players were already smoking marijuana during his tenure, and said it’s up to the league to educate team doctors about alternatives to opioids.

Stern was influenced by a segment on CNN where Dr. Sanjay Gupta called current cannabis laws “crazy.”

Current NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in August that he was “open” to legalizing medical cannabis for players, so long as it was regulated and used for pain management.
