Danish immigration minister Inger Støjberg had to flee from a visit to a deportation center Friday after altercations with rejected asylum seekers.

Støjberg visited the center to meet with families and discuss conditions for children. The situation escalated to a point where guards had to escort her out of the facility and put her in a car.

A video from state broadcaster DR shows a woman attacking the car as it left the deportation center.

WATCH:

“When we came outside after the visit, the atmosphere started getting aggressive. Residents started gathering around Støjberg,” journalist Martin Torpe told DR. “Some people were shouting and taking hold of her. Eventually she was escorted to the minister’s car. Then a number of people gathered around the car and attempted to prevent it from driving away. A woman who was very upset threw herself on to the hood while the car was moving.”

Støjberg thanked her bodyguards for protecting her from a situation that “could have ended very badly.”

Støjberg celebrated the passage of tighter immigration laws in March with a cake. She further stirred up emotions when she posted cartoons of the prophet Mohammed on social media in September.
