Fort Bragg Army Sgt. Robert Thornton Jr. died Tuesday during physical training after suddenly collapsing.

Thornton, who was from Cairo, Ga., was running when he collapsed without warning, The Fayetteville Observer reports.

Soldiers quickly took Thornton to the Womack Army medical center, but by then it was too late. At this time, the cause of death is unknown.

Investigators are currently looking into the case.

Thornton was part of the 528th Sustainment Brigade, which belonged to the 1st Special Forces Command.

He joined the Army in 2012 and has been given numerous awards.

“We mourn the loss of this dedicated soldier and our thoughts and prayers are with his family,” Army Lt. Col. Shaw Pick, battalion commander, told The Fayetteville Observer. “He was a member of our team, and his life was spent in service to his family, his friends and his country.”
