Republican Sen. John McCain complained Tuesday that President Donald Trump was politicizing Navajo veterans by calling Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren “Pocahontas.”

In a Tuesday tweet, McCain blasted Trump for insulting sacrifice of the Navajo code talkers, who served during World War II.

“Our nation owes a debt of gratitude to the Navajo Code Talkers, whose bravery, skill & tenacity helped secure our decisive victory over tyranny & oppression during WWII,” McCain said. “Politicizing these genuine American heroes is an insult to their sacrifice.”

At an event Monday honoring the code talkers, Navajo veterans who transmitted uncrackable messages using their native tongue, Trump made fun of Warren, calling her “Pocahontas.”

“You were here long before any of us were here,” Trump said Monday at a White House event honoring the Navajo veterans. “Although we have a representative in Congress who they say was here a long time ago. They call her ‘Pocahontas.’ But you know what? I like you.”

Warren has been widely mocked for using her self-claimed Native American heritage to gain political advantages.

But in fact, research conducted by genealogist Chris Child has revealed that Warren only had a great-great-great-grandmother who was Cherokee, which would make her just 1/32nd Native American. But the New England Historic Genealogical Society later reversed the finding, saying there is “no proof that Elizabeth Warren’s great-great-great-grandmother O.C. Sarah Smith either is or is not of Cherokee descent.”

Trump first made use of the insult in 2016, when he called her a “lowlife” for faking her heritage.

After the event, Warren blasted Trump for using a “racial slur,” but she did not address the issue of her background.
