The ranking Democrat of the House Budget Committee, John Yarmuth, defended calling President Donald Trump a “cancer on the country” Wednesday, and said Trump had “damaged the foundations of democracy.”

“I don’t think that we’ve ever seen a president who has so damaged the foundations of democracy as this president has done,” Yarmuth said on “CNN Newsroom.” “It happens on a daily basis.”

Yarmuth said his tough talk is designed to avoid “normalizing” Trump’s behavior, and accused the president of being an extremist who is undermining the country’s justice system.

“The risk in not speaking out and speaking out in the harshest terms, is that we normalize his behavior,” Yarmuth said. “They’re harsh terms but this president has done some pretty harsh things and extreme things. Again he’s damaging democracy, he’s damaging our basic institutions like our justice system so I’m going to continue to speak out,” he concluded.
