Boulder, Colo., is taking legal action to force fossil fuel companies to cover the cost of damages caused by severe weather events, Energy In Depth reports.
Several cities and municipalities have launched lawsuits against the largest oil and gas companies in recent months. Several cities and counties in California have filed, as well as New York City, all trying to force the companies to pay for damages from weather related events and improve infrastructure to resist severe weather in the future.
The lawsuits argue that fossil fuel companies are responsible for the damages caused by weather because the companies are some of the largest greenhouse gas contributors.
The defendants in the Boulder lawsuit have not yet been named; however, other lawsuits have targeted as many as 29 separate energy companies.
“These suits sound pretty crazy to me given that the city will have to establish that climate change is real, the industry caused the problem and the city can now solve it,” Mountain States Legal Foundation President William Perry Kendley told the Legal NewsLine. “They have an incredible proof problem that I think is unattainable.”
