The U.S. government has officially granted Ford a patent to create self-driving cars that could eventually be used to help apprehend traffic offenders and more serious criminals.

Ford, like many tech companies and other car manufacturers, have been developing autonomous vehicles for quite some time. But the new patent, which was observed and first reported on by Business Insider, shows what kind of vision the American automotive company has for its cars of the future.

First filed July 2016, the patent includes a diagram of “techniques” related to a “autonomous police vehicle,” which “may be trained or otherwise programmed using machine learning tools (e.g., deep neural networks) to find good hiding spots to catch violators of traffic laws.” (RELATED: Ford, Domino’s Testing Pizza Delivery With No Drivers)

The vehicles will be equipped with sensors, cameras, a laser system, a central computing system, and wireless communication infrastructure to ultimately operate completely independent of human control.

Ford has made other moves within its larger driverless car project, including teaming up with Lyft, the ride-sharing firm, and Argo AI, an artificial intelligence company based in Pittsburgh, Penn. (RELATED: Ford Makes A $1 Billion prediction That It Expects To Come True In Just Four Years)

Not all patents actually materialize into actual products or concepts, and are more of a way to claim a stake for a future prospect, and box out competitors from exploring a highly similar enterprise. But this one seems, for the most part, doable, and implementable at least sometime over the upcoming years and decades.
