Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina had some strong words for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on “Fox & Friends” Monday after a gas attack left dozens dead and hundreds injured.

“I think now [Assad] is a legitimate war criminal in the eyes of the international community,” Graham said. “Assad and his inner circle should be considered war criminals. Legitimate military targets. If you have the opportunity to take him out, you should.”

“You should ground his air force. You should destroy his air force,” he continued. “We should set up safe zones inside of Syria. Telling the Russians and the Iranians and anything left of Assad: If you cross this line we’ll shoot you down, so the Syrian people can regroup.”

Graham thinks President Donald Trump has an opportunity to differentiate himself from former President Barack Obama by standing up to the Syrian regime and believes he should send a “strong signal” of power.

“The world is watching the president. Iran is watching the president. Russia is watching the president and North Korea’s watching the president. This president has a chance to do exactly the opposite of Obama,” Graham concluded. “Send a strong signal that there’s a new sheriff in town and America is back.”
