The most common job in America is a retail salesperson, and it’s the most popular job in 40 out of 50 states.

The second, third, and fourth most popular are cashier, food prepper and office worker. But those rankings aren’t really surprising.

What is surprising is this list of popular jobs unique to every state.

Business Insider came up with a methodology to show the most disproportionately popular job in each state across America. For example, fashion designers make up a much, much larger percentage of workers in New York than in any other state in the union.

It works like this. BI measured jobs with “at least 1,000 people employed, using the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ recently released May 2016 Occupational Employment Statistics,” to figure out which jobs each state had much more of “per capita than the nation as a whole.”
