BuzzFeed plans to close its office in France, effectively ending the BuzzFeed France vertical and at least a dozen employees in the process, according to a report from The Wrap that was subsequently confirmed by The Daily Caller News Foundation.
“We are taking steps to reconsider our operation in France given the uncertain path to growth in the French market. We have begun a consultation process with BuzzFeed France and will follow up when we have more information to share,” a spokesman for the company told TheDCNF.
An individual within the company also said that the layoffs were “exclusive” to the France offices and that “none of our other offices will be impacted.”
A number of employees at the French operation expressed dismay at the company’s decision, with one journalist, Stephane Jourdain, calling it “unexpected.”
“And I thought that my biggest concern during this maternity leave would be the amount of diapers to change,” tweeted the site’s editor-in-chief, Cecile Dehesdin, who is currently on maternity leave. (RELATED: BuzzFeed To Lay Off 100 Employees)
An internal company-wide email sent by Scott Lamb, BuzzFeed’s vice president of international growth, obtained by The Wrap, said: “We have questions about whether we can build a sustainable business in France.”
The company announced that it would lay off 100 employees after weak earning numbers in November 2017.
