In a 12-year high, Americans are increasingly growing satisfied with the direction the country is headed in, a Gallup poll published on Monday shows.
About 38 percent of Americans are satisfied with the direction the country is going in, which is the highest recorded since September 2005, when it was at 39 percent. For the second month in a row, over 35 percent of Americans responded that they’re content with the direction the country is headed, which is also for the first time since 2005.
The current rate reflects the historical average of 37 percent for this trend, which Gallup first began measuring in 1979, according to the poll.
The only category Gallup measured, like age and political party identification, that didn’t increase in respondents’ satisfaction was those who identified as being a Democrat, which stayed at 13 percent from March to June.
The poll reflects an overall trend that points to President Donald Trump’s increased approval rating, but despite this, Gallup notes that the poll shows “more than a growing comfort with Donald Trump as president [since] growth in satisfaction has outstripped growth in Trump’s approval rating.”
“[I]t is more than economic good news — the percentage satisfied has risen more over the past two months than the percentage who think the economy is in good shape or the percentage who think it’s a good time to find a quality job,” Gallup said in its analysis.
U.S. respondents have only ever polled at 35 percent or higher three times since 2005: one time each in 2006, 2009 and 2016, the poll reveals. (RELATED: America Is Split Right Down The Middle On Abortion, Poll Shows)
The Gallup research, conducted from June 1 to 13, reveals that Republican and independent respondents rose significantly in their overall satisfaction in the direction, which boosted the overall satisfaction rate to its highest since 2005.
The survey reveals that 68 percent of Republicans responded as being satisfied with the way things are going in the U.S. at this time, a 14-point increase from a survey Gallup conducted from March to April; and 36 percent of Independents responded as being satisfied, which was an increase of 11 points since March.
The poll surveyed 1,520 adults, 18 years old and older who lived in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The margin of error is ±3 percentage points at the 95-percent confidence level.
