Today is expected to be the peak travel day for the Fourth of July holiday weekend, and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) predicts today might be the busiest day ever in the history of screenings.

It could even surpass the record set right after Thanksgiving in 2004, when 2,713,864 people were screened at airports across the U.S.

TSA is predicting to complete about 2.7 million screenings for crew members and passengers today.

The agency is encouraging travelers to arrive early and well-prepared, and leave the fireworks at home. They have put out Summer Travel Tips that they are encouraging travelers to read.

AAA also put out a statement warning travelers of travel times that could be twice as long as normal in congested cities. It predicts Tuesday, July 3, to be the busiest day for road trips this holiday weekend. AAA is defining the Independence Day holiday period as Tuesday, July 3 to Sunday, July 8.
