Sen. John Thune revealed why he visited Russia on the Fourth of July with a Congressional delegation, saying the delegation told high-level Russian officials that Russia “must stop meddling in our elections” in a press statement Friday.

“During our meetings, we stated in no uncertain terms that Russia must stop its meddling in our elections and that its destabilizing actions in the region are not without consequence,” Thune said.

“The delegation also stressed that Russia respect the sovereignty of Ukraine and help bring about a peaceful resolution in Syria. These discussions were direct and to-the-point,” Thune continued. “It’s now up to the Russian government to demonstrate that it will be a responsible actor on the world stage.” (RELATED: Fact Check: Did A GOP Senator Lie about where he was on July Fourth?)

The delegation, lead by Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby, also stopped in Finland and Norway during the trip.
