Former NSC spokesman Michael Anton refuted a statement by CNN host Erin Burnett on Monday. Anton disputed Burnett’s claim that he had cancelled an appearance on her show because he would not defend President Trump after his meeting with Putin in Helsinki, Finland.

CNN host Erin Burnett tweeted Monday: “Michael Anton, Former Trump NSC spox, cancelled his appearance on Outfront tonight because he couldn’t defend @realDonaldTrump today.”

Anton responded:

From the moment President Trump’s press conference ended, CNNs coverage was atrocious and histrionic. I did cancel, because I knew that whatever I said, CNN would try to use me as a cudgel with which to bash the president. I support President Trump and I never want to be misused as an instrument to undermine hi or his administration.

As soon as CNN was informed of my withdrawal, they threatened to cite that withdrawal on air to bash the president. And that’s exactly what they did. It’s clear I made the right decision.

Following President Trump’s meeting with Putin, outrageous comments have come from multiple media outlets, commentators and even former officials. Former CIA Director John Brennan called Trump “treasonous” following a press conference with the Russian president, and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said Trump was “aiding and abetting our arch adversary” Russia.
