The increase of Democratic women running for office this election cycle might change the demographic representation of the Democratic Party in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Women make up 32 percent of Democratic members in the House, while white men make up for 39 percent, according to the Pew Research Center, The Hill reported.

The 2018 midterms, especially due to the amount of female primary winners, will be considerably difficult for white male candidates, which could even continue to affect this group in future elections, according to a June 27 Washington Post article headlined “The worst thing to be in many Democratic primaries? A white male candidate.”
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democratic socialist who defeated Rep. Joe Crowley in New York’s congressional primary, is the visual image of what most voters in the Democratic Party would like to see more of in the future, Run For Something co-founder Amanda Litman told Business Insider.
“Women of color are the backbone of the Democratic Party, and our leaders should be representative of the voters we’re trying to reach,” Litman said.
The Democratic Party has a diverse pool of candidates for the 2018 midterms, including Muslims, openly LGBTQ individuals, women and people of color, according to Axios. Lupe Valdez, the Democratic Texas gubernatorial nominee, is openly lesbian, and Rashida Tlaib is a Muslim Democratic congressional candidate from Detroit.
