A missing hiker survived six days on Washington’s Mount St. Helens by eating bees, he said after being found Wednesday.

Matthew B. Matheny, 40, from Warren, Ohio, managed to survive the ordeal by eating berries and bees after going missing for six days while hiking, Fox News reported. Matheny went missing after setting out to hike the Blue Lake Trail on Aug. 9, according to the Oregonian.

A search-and-rescue team used drones, dogs, and helicopters daily to try and find Matheny. The personnel found his borrowed Subaru Outback that he used for the trail Saturday. The team then used a cell phone signal and a computer monitor to help track his whereabouts Tuesday.

The search-and-rescue personnel found him Wednesday on a different trail. He was reportedly in good health but still flown to a Vancouver hospital overnight. (RELATED: Hiker Stumbles Upon Multi-Million Dollar Pot Farm With Possible Cartel Links)

“He knew it was a tough situation,” his wife Linda Matheny told the Oregonian. “But everyone who has encountered him have told us it’s remarkable the condition he’s in.”

Matheny’s parents said that their son was a former Boy Scout with a strong interest in fitness and nutrition.
