The Department of Justice is investigating how the FBI handled the sex abuse allegations against former gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar.

The DOJ is looking into how the FBI handled the accusations against Nassar after claims that agents failed to follow up on gymnasts’ complaints in 2015, The Wall Street Journal reported. Nassar was sentenced in February to up to 175 years in prison after sexually abusing hundreds of his patients under the guise of performing medical treatments, CNN reported.

The Justice Department is specifically examining how the FBI’s Indianapolis office responded or failed to respond to sex abuse allegations from gymnasts about Nassar starting in July 2015. The specific agent under scrutiny is Indianapolis agent W. Jay Abbott and his communications with former USA Gymnastics Chief Executive Steve Penny.

At least eight months later, an investigation was opened in Los Angeles in 2016. (RELATED: Larry Nassar Files For Resentencing, Blames Judge For Being Biased)

Kerry Perry, the chief executive of USA Gymnastics for only nine months, resigned from her position following allegations that the organization did not follow through on allegations against Nassar, the organization said Tuesday.
