Former President George W. Bush is standing by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh after allegations surfaced that the judge sexually assaulted Christine Blasey Ford as a teenager.
“Laura and I have known and respected Brett Kavanaugh for decades, and we stand by our comments the night Judge Kavanaugh was nominated,” Bush told Politico in a statement.
After President Donald Trump nominated Kavanaugh in July, Bush issued a statement supporting Trump’s pick. “[Kavanaugh] is a fine husband, father, and friend — and a man of the highest integrity. He will make a superb Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States,” he said.

Ford, a California researcher, claims Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a party while both where in high school. Two of Ford’s friends have come forward to support her claim, saying that Ford told them of the incident prior to Kavanaugh’s appointment to the Supreme Court, though Ford never told her friends the name of who assaulted her.
Kavanaugh has denied the allegations and friends and past acquaintances have stepped forward to testify for his good character. Kavanaugh has agreed to testify in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on the allegations.
“This is a completely false allegation. I have never done anything like what the accuser describes—to her or to anyone. Because this never happened, I had no idea who was making this accusation until she identified herself,” Kavanaugh said in a statement after Ford went public with her accusation.
The allegations could potentially derail Kavanaugh’s appointment to the Supreme Court. If his nomination is tanked, the Senate likely will not have enough time left to confirm another nominee before the end of the year, leaving the process to the next Congress.
