Florida’s Democratic nominee for governor, Andrew Gillum, compared his Republican opponent Ron DeSantis and President Donald Trump to “pigs” on “The Daily Show” Monday, adding they’re trying to drag him down into the mud.

Host Trevor Noah highlighted the worsening political division in America and then complimented Gillum on his calm handling of DeSantis on the debate stage.

“Well, I don’t know [DeSantis], number one right? But he has a family, he’s got kids. I have to imagine that at his core he’s a decent person,” Gillum began. “I think for me, my grandmother used to have this saying, ‘Never, ever, ever wrestle with pigs,’ she said, ‘because you both get dirty, but the pig actually likes it.'”

“And that was important for me because what I realize is what DeSantis and Trump want to do is drag me into the gutter with them, right?” he continued.

Gillum said Trump and DeSantis can “survive” diving into the filth and accused them of trying to peg him with stereotypes. (RELATED: Andrew Gillum’s Comments On Law Enforcement Are ‘Disgusting’ And A ‘Disgrace’ Says Florida County Sheriff)

“They can survive getting dirty. I can’t survive getting dirty, because what they want to do is have me fit a stereotype,” he said.

“I’ve got to be cool and collected and precise, non-defensive, but also have the ability to land a punch where it’s necessary,” he said.
