Idris Elba apparently isn’t even close to playing James Bond.
Elba has long been rumored to be a major possibility for the famous role, but no such talks have ever taken place. According to a Monday profile from The Hollywood Reporter, Elba has “never been formally approached about the 007 role.”
One of the major reasons people think Elba is in play is because he had a tweet back in August that stated, “my name’s Elba, Idris Elba.” Clearly, he was playing off the legendary introduction Bond gives himself.

He also addressed the tweet with THR and told them, “I took the piss a little, but I was also reminding people that I never got referred to as James Bond. So, I was like, hello, my name is Elba. Well, it seems like all the Elba hype as Bond can officially come to an end. They haven’t talked to him, and he doesn’t seem overly interested.
Besides, Cillian Murphy is the man rumored to have the inside track to get the next movie as Bond. I think that’s a terrible choice, but it might surprise you to learn film studios don’t reach out to me prior to making casting decisions.
Whoever is next to fill the shoes, let’s just hope it’s somebody good. Daniel Craig has done a hell of a job, and I don’t want to see that drop off at all.
