President Donald Trump claimed Saturday that his former White House Counsel Don McGahn was in more danger of being fired than former special counsel Robert Mueller ever was.

“I was NOT going to fire Bob Mueller, and did not fire Bob Mueller,” the president tweeted. “In fact, he was allowed to finish his Report with unprecedented help from the Trump Administration. Actually, lawyer Don McGahn had a much better chance of being fired than Mueller. Never a big fan!”

McGahn left the White House in October 2018, but his name came back to the forefront after the Mueller report was released. McGahn reportedly told Mueller’s team that Trump had asked him to shut the investigation down or have Mueller removed, a request McGahn said that he denied and that Trump said was never made. Mueller, by all accounts, was allowed to complete his investigation and release his report in his own time. Since its release, McGahn has refused a Congressional subpoena and declined to state publicly that he does not believe the president obstructed justice.
