Democratic California Rep. Adam Schiff on Sunday said that the country could not “survive” a second term with President Donald Trump in office.

The California lawmaker made the comments during Sunday’s edition of ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.” Stephanopoulos had just finished playing a clip of Trump referring to a possible 2020 victory at a Wednesday rally.

“You heard the president right there, he says you all are going to elect him in 2020,” said Stephanopoulos.

“That’s not going to happen and I don’t think this country could survive another four years of a president like this who gets up every day trying to find new and inventive ways to divide us,” said Schiff. “He doesn’t seem to understand that a fundamental aspect of his job is to try to make us a more perfect union. But that’s not at all where he’s coming from.”

“And he’s going to be defeated,” he continued. “He has to be defeated because I don’t know how much more our democratic institutions can take of this kind of attack on the rule of law.” (RELATED: Goldman Sachs Says The Markets Point To Trump Advantage In 2020)

While a number of Democrats are currently vying for the chance to face off against Trump in the 2020 general election, economists say defeating the president in a strong economy could prove a difficult task.
