Former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro hit back at Democratic Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke over his response to a question about immigration during the first 2020 Democratic debate.

O’Rourke was asked what he would do during his first day of being president. He began his response in Spanish, and then switched to English but was interrupted by Castro.

“We would not build walls we would not put kids in cages, in fact we would spare no expense to reunite the families…” O’Rourke began before being interrupted by Castro.

The moderator asked for O’Rourke to be allowed to finish, and he continued by saying that he would not prosecute those “fleeing the deadliest countries on the face of the planet today.” O’Rourke said a plan would be implemented to care for them, and immigration laws would be re-written to allow for them to become American citizens.

“Let’s be very clear,” Castro hit back at O’Rourke. “The reason that they are separating these little children from their families is that they’re using Section 1325, that act, which criminalizes coming across the border … some of us on this stage have called to end that…”

“Some, like Congressman O’Rourke, have not.” Castro continued amid O’Rourke’s interruptions. “…I think that you should do your homework on this issue. If you did your homework on this issue you would know that we should repeal this section.”
