Former New England Patriots Linebacker Tedy Bruschi is recovering from a stroke he suffered Thursday, his foundation “Tedy’s Team” announced in an Instagram post Friday.

The post said the former All-Pro defender is “recovering well” at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Massachusetts.

“Yesterday afternoon, Tedy had a stroke, known as a TIA,” the organization said. “He recognized his warning signs immediately: arm weakness, face drooping, and speech difficulties.”

Tedy’s Team, which raises money for stroke research, thanked the hospital and the public on Bruschi’s behalf.

“Tedy is recovering well, and would like to thank the nurses, doctors, and staff at Sturdy Memorial Hospital for all they have done,” they said. “Tedy and his family thank you for your ongoing encouragement, and kindly ask for your privacy at this time.”

The 46-year-old Bruschi previously suffered a stroke in 2005, three weeks after winning his third Super Bowl title in New England, which inspired him to found Tedy’s Team. Bruschi played in the NFL for thirteen years, all with the Patriots. (RELATED: Patriots Changed The Super Bowl Forever By Coming Out Of Tunnel As Team)

During his 13 years in New England, Bruschi participated in five Super Bowls, winning three of them. Since his retirement, Bruschi has worked as an analyst and a broadcaster, and now works for ESPN.
