It looks like HBO might have struck gold with “The Righteous Gemstones.”
I’ve been very excited about this show with Danny McBride, John Goodman and Adam Devine ever since the previews starting coming out.
It follows a televangelist family, the Gemstones, as they pile up the money while preaching the gospel. Obviously, that’s a great formula for a funny show. (RELATED: Watch Danny McBride In The Trailer For HBO’s ‘The Righteous Gemstones‘)
I cranked out the season one premiere last night, and it didn’t disappoint.
Now, is it funny like “Eastbound & Down” was with McBride? No. It’s a totally different kind of humor. The show about Kenny Powers was much more in your face.
“The Righteous Gemstones” is much darker. For example, there’s a blackmail plot line in the premiere over a video containing nudity and drug use. The end result is two people getting run over in hysterical fashion.
So, it’s funny, but it’s all about dark comedy through episode one. If you’re expecting it to be “Eastbound & Down” 2.0, then you’re going to be disappointed.
However, it’s still absolutely worth your attention. Devine and McBride play the sons of Goodman, who is the man behind the gigantic church.
While we’re only one episode in, I can already tell this show is going to absolutely skewer massive churches that just have cash dumped on their heads.
Devine and McBride are also great on screen together. Hopefully, we get a ton of them together going forward. It seems likely because they are brothers in the show.

If you haven’t already caught the premiere, then I suggest you give it a shot. You can catch it Sunday nights on HBO. It’s pretty great.
