As many as 47 kindergarten teachers at Gilbert Public Schools may be laid off and most parents who want their 5-year-olds in full-day kindergarten will be asked to pay tuition, the governing board has decided.
At a work study session Tuesday, four of the five board members told a crowd of about 120 people that they couldn’t in good conscience approve spending an estimated $3.7 million to offer tuition-free, full-day kindergarten when programs for first to 12th grades would be trimmed or revamped to offset the expense and state funding cuts.
