AOL began layoffs Thursday that will total more than 900 workers — approximately 20 percent of its workforce — as the company continues to transition into an online media business.

A spokesman confirmed the cuts, which were originally reported late Wednesday by AllThingsD, but were then expected to add up to no more than 500 people.

The job cuts will involve about 200 workers at the company’s media and technology operations in the US, and about 700 workers in India who were mostly involved in support work. The spokesman said a portion of these workers — about 300 — will transition to third-party companies that will continue to provide support services to AOL.
