Comedienne Chelsea Handler, who has written three books about her love for sex and alcohol, recently opened up to the New York Times about her television career, initial doubts about whether she’d make it in the entertainment industry, and an abortion she had as a teenager.
The bestselling author, whose memoir, “Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea,” will be adapted into a sitcom starring Laura Prepon, told the Times that she’d been right to terminate her pregnancy as a teenager.
“I had an abortion when I was 16. Because that’s what I should have done,” Handler said. “Otherwise I would now have a 20-year-old kid. Anyway, those are things that people shouldn’t be dishonest about it.”
Handler, who has written extensively on her numerous sexual encounters and drinking habits, added that society won’t address taboo subjects.
“People are too P.C.,” Handler said. “We need to be focusing on other things. We’re seeking out such grossness in human behavior and want such mindless entertainment. ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’ and some of these other shows are more racist. Or ’16 and Pregnant.’ Getting rewarded for being pregnant when you’re a teenager? Are you serious? I mean, that makes me want to kill somebody.”
But the Garden State native doesn’t seem to think she could ever be universally liked or accepted by all.
“I don’t know if I’m going to be what people call mainstream, ever,” Handler said. “My personality is just too obnoxious.”
Many would agree with the latter claim, as Handler has gotten into several public disputes with celebrities. Late last year, Handler called Angelina Jolie a “homewrecker,” “b-tch,” and “c-nt” who has no female friends. In spring 2010, Handler joked that the heavily tattooed Michelle “Bombshell” McGee wore a magazine on her face, to which the tattoo model responded, “[y]ou need to hire another midget to hold up those saggy boobies of yours…all that breast feeding from Chuy has really taken its toll.”
When Handler slighted Nick Cannon’s comedy tour in October, the singer tweeted, “Everyone knows @Chelseahandler had sex with the head of E! for her show. So when its canceled does he get residual p***y for the reruns?”
