A Little Birdy Tells Me…

Alex Burns, who abruptly and quietly left Politico in late fall, has been hired by the NYT, sources tell The Mirror. The only thing left is The Grey Lady announcing it and making it official.

As previously reported by HuffPost‘s Michael Calderone, Burns has been in talks with the NYT for a beat covering New York City politics. If the deal goes through, which sources assure it has, he will join other former Politico reporters Jonathan Martin and Maggie Haberman, whose NYT hire was just announced Friday.

Amid the wreckage of some 100 recent layoffs and buyouts at the NYT, Executive Editor Dean Baquet announced in a memo that they’d be making “a few” careful hires outside the publication while promoting from within.

I requested a comment from Baquet on this hire. He must be busy reviewing the publication’s apparently not so strict Social Media policy. [RELATED: Dean Baquet Calls Journalism Prof An A-hole]

Technically, anyhow, Burns would still fall under the vague numbering of “a few.”

Burns graduated from Harvard in 2008 and went straight to Politico.
