New York City held a memorial service for NYPD detective Joseph Lemm Wednesday who, after digging through the wreckage on Sept. 11 for weeks, joined the military to make a difference.

He was killed Dec. 21 by a suicide bomber and a photo of the man’s 4-year-old son, Ryan, saluting his father’s casket at the memorial service is gut wrenching.

Lemm, who was called “Superman” by his fellow cops, was serving as a sergeant in the Air National Guard on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan when he was killed by a Taliban suicide bomber. He served one tour in Iraq as well.

“Three times, this war took him thousands of miles away from his family, and the city and country he so dearly loved,” Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said in his eulogy. “And now it has taken him farther than miles. It has taken him to a new post in eternity.”

Lemm also left behind his wife Christine and a 17-year-old daughter, who spoke at his service and ended with a quote from the Book of Ecclesiastes.

“A time to love and a time to hate,” she said. “A time for war and a time for peace.”
