FLINT — Hillary Clinton joined Sen. Bernie Sanders in calling for Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder to resign because of the Flint water crisis during CNN’s Democratic debate.
“I agree, the governor should resign or be recalled, and we should support the efforts of citizens attempting to achieve that,” the former secretary of state said Sunday. “But that is not enough. We have to focus on what must be done to help the people of Flint.”
Sanders has been calling for Snyder’s resignation for months, but this is the first time Clinton has gone as far as calling for Snyder’s ouster.
Just prior to Clinton’s comments, Sanders reiterated his call for the Michigan governor to resign.
“I believe the governor of this state should understand that his dereliction of duty was irresponsible — he should resign,” the Vermont senator said.
Snyder responded to both Democratic candidates on Twitter:
I’m taking responsibility as our value system says we should. My track record is getting things done, and I want to get this done. #FlintFWD
