Indiana Gov. Mike Pence refused to defend his running mate, Donald Trump, for vulgar comments the Republican nominee made about women in 2005.

“As a husband and father, I was offended by the words and actions described by Donald Trump in the eleven-year-old video released yesterday,” Pence said in a statement.

“I do not condone his remarks and cannot defend them,” he added.

Trump has apologized for the crude language, but a day after the leaked audio of Trump’s past comments surfaced, Pence had little to offer other than an expression of hope for redemption and prayers. (RELATED: Trump Apologizes After Hidden Cam Video Surfaces Of Him Talking Lewd About Women)

“I am grateful that he has expressed remorse and apologized to the American people. We pray for his family and look forward to the opportunity he has to show what is in his heart when he goes before the nation tomorrow night,” Pence said.

Sources told the Associated Press that Pence was privately “beside himself” and that his wife was incensed over the comments.
