Nigel Farage, the bombastic former leader of the UK Independence Party and key figure in the successful Brexit movement, took aim at liberal academia during a Tuesday speech at Hillsdale College in Michigan.

“Our educational establishments, through school, college, and university have been so completely hijacked by the liberal left, who actually, in the classical O.E.D. definition of it, are the most illiberal people I have ever seen or met in my life,” Farage, who has campaigned against politically correct culture throughout his career, claimed.

WATCH:

“It is horrifying!” Farage said of the restrictions on right-leaning speech among today’s students, who he said the modern left-wing is teaching, “not just to be indoctrinated to one point of view, but to think the other point of view is unacceptable, should be protested against, and even should be banned.”

Farage sought to link this pervasive attitude to the wider reaction to the election of Donald Trump. “There are thousands of people on the streets of London tonight protesting against Donald J. Trump even visiting the United Kingdom,” he said. A debate is currently taking place in the UK’s House of Commons as to whether it is appropriate to invite the President.

“This young generation, who scream words like ‘fascist,’ have actually themselves become the fascists.”
