Former Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona expressed support for her former colleagues who suffered an attack from an unknown gunman at a baseball field in Alexandria, Va. early Wednesday morning.

Giffords tweeted from her personal account Wednesday morning that her “heart is with my former colleagues, their families & staff, and the US Capitol Police.” The former representative also called the lawmakers and their staff “heroes today and every day.”

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was shot Wednesday morning.

Giffords suffered an assassination attempt on Jan. 8, 2011 in a grocery store parking lot in Tuscon, Arizona. The former congresswoman and her husband have pushed for gun control since the 2011 shooting.
