DePaul University pledged “unwavering commitment” to its illegal immigrant students in a Tuesday statement, following President Donald Trump’s announcement to rescind Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
“I will reiterate and pledge my support to a message that DePaul administrators have shared with you in the past,” said university president, A. Gabriel Esteban, in the letter obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation. “DePaul has always welcomed students regardless of their citizenship status, and we will maintain an unwavering commitment to undocumented students who choose this university for their education.”
The president proceeded to list a variety of resources available to illegal immigrant students, such as legal and counseling services, as well as scholarships and financial aid materials.
Illegal immigrant students “are as much a part of Chicago as any students, and they deserve a chance to fully contribute to our culture and economy,” said Esteban. “The experience my wife and I had immigrating to the United States is evidence of the transformative power of education and the good that comes from providing support to students through trying life circumstances.”
“I encourage the U.S. government to find a permanent solution that helps these students to realize the American dream.”
While DePaul University pledged “unwavering commitment” to illegal immigrant students, the school banned conservative authors Milo Yiannopoulos and Ben Shapiro in 2016 after interruptions at both speakers’ lectures on the campus.
