Philip Rivers is coming to Eli Manning’s defense after the New York Giants decided to bench their longtime starting quarterback in favor of Geno Smith.
“I honestly thought it was pathetic, really,” Rivers said of the decision. “I feel like he’s earned the opportunity to finish it off, finish off these last five weeks.”
Rivers’ take is particularly interesting considering he and Manning traded places during the first round of the 2004 NFL draft. The San Diego Chargers selected Manning with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft but he was traded to the New York Giants that same night and the Chargers ended up with Rivers. It’s turned out well for both quarterbacks and their respective teams with the Giants winning two Super Bowls with Manning under center. Clearly the team’s appreciation for Eli has gone sour and they’ve handled it in horrible fashion.
