Police in Germany and the United Kingdom have foiled Islamist plots to carry out attacks during Christmas.

A 29-year-old man considered to be an active Islamic State member was arrested for allegedly planning a truck attack against an ice skating rink in the German city of Karlsruhe. The suspect spent several months applying for truck-driving jobs without success.

He previously fought for ISIS in Iraq were he received weapons training and scouted locations for potential attacks, police said.

Four men were detained Tuesday at separate locations in Britain after an operation to stop a bomb attack during Christmas, potentially against a Christmas market in Sheffield. Counter-terrorism police called the arrests “significant” and said the suspects had been on their radar.

Europe is on high alert during the holidays after a truck attack killed 12 people at a Christmas market in Berlin last year. Italian authorities have increased security checks at airports, train stations and ports. High-traffic areas have also set an upper limit on the number of people allowed at once.

The U.S. Department of State recently issued a warning to citizens planning on visiting Europe during Christmas. The travel alert will be in effect until Jan. 31.
