The Mexican secretary of foreign affairs will ask the United Nations to intervene in the separation of children at the U.S.-Mexican border, according to a Thursday article from Cronica.
“The Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Luis Videgaray, will solicit the intervention of the United Nations in order to prevent the separation of children from their parents at the border, regardless of immigration status,” the article statesd.
Videgaray will meet with the U.N secretary general in order to further discuss the request, the article stated. He also plans to meet with members of the Americas Society and Council of the Americas, a pan-American business organization, according to the article.

The Mexican government has commented previously on the separation of families at the border, calling it “cruel and inhuman,” according to a June 19 article from the Los Angeles Times. However, there are only 21 cases of child separation that have involved people from Mexico, according to the same article.
Videgaray has acknowledged that Mexico cannot determine U.S. policy, according to the article. “Nonetheless, we cannot be indifferent to something that clearly represents a violation of human rights and puts minor children … in a situation of vulnerability,” Videgaray said, according to the LA Times article.
