Officials at the Minnesota Correctional Facility say a prisoner killed a prison guard on Wednesday. As Fox News reports, the Minnesota Department of Corrections alleges that inmate Edward Muhammad Johnson severely attacked corrections officer Joseph Gomm.

Gomm was immediately taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at approximately 1:30 p.m. The prison guard had served at the facility for 16 years, according to the corrections department.

“Joseph gave the ultimate sacrifice while working to protect the citizens of Minnesota,” said Sarah Fitzgerald, a spokeswoman corrections department.

Johnson, 42, was convicted of murder and had been serving his sentence in the facility.

Officials placed both the Minnesota Correctional Facility and other nearby penitentiaries under lockdown — until they could assess the extent of the threat.
