Meghan McCain gave an emotional eulogy to her father, former Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. on Saturday. McCain, “The View” co-host and regular critic of President Trump, took a jab at the president’s campaign slogan in her remarks.
“The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again because America was always great,” McCain said, referencing Trump’s presidential campaign slogan “Make America Great Again.”
McCain continued, saying, “American greatness. The real thing, not cheap rhetoric from men who will never come near the sacrifice he gave so willingly, nor the opportunistic appropriation of those who lived lives of comfort and privilege while he suffered and served.”
The audience roared at the remarks.
Multiple high-ranking members of the Trump administration were in attendance, but the president was not invited.
Trump was tweeting during the funeral about the Department of Justice and the FBI. Soon after McCain’s remarks, Trump tweeted “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” in all caps.

Some media outlets and commentators have suggested that Trump was directly responding to McCain in the tweet. The president does tweet the slogan regularly.
Earlier in the week the president issued a proclamation honoring McCain.
