Sen. Bernie Sanders’ plans for a nine-day campaign blitz for Democrats could set the stage for a presidential run.
Sanders’ itinerary for the campaign blitz beginning Oct. 19, as shared by one of his aides, showed several visits to Iowa, as well as stops in South Carolina and Nevada, each of which are key visits for gaining the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Sanders, an Independent from Vermont, will speak in support of Democratic candidates who will be on the ballot in November for the House and the Senate. Sanders, who is running for a third term as senator for Vermont and is considering a 2020 presidential run, will also be visiting Arizona, California, Colorado, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. Jeff Weaver, Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign manager, has openly encouraged him to run in 2020. He is heavily favored to win re-election in Vermont.
While he is expected to decide whether he will run for president in 2020 in the coming months, this campaign blitz in combination with his supporter base could help him to distinguish himself as a contender in what is shaping up to be a crowded field for the Democratic presidential primary.
Sanders has thus far traveled to 17 states since the beginning of 2018 and has maintained an expansive list of his supporters that he used to raise substantial funds in 2016 and will no doubt use in support of the Democratic candidates for whom he is speaking.
