Meghan McCain defended the integrity of Attorney General William Barr on ABC’s “The View” Thursday, arguing that he was “not a Trump lackey.”

McCain was responding to claims that Barr, since the release of the Mueller report, has acted not as America’s attorney general but as President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer.

“First and foremost, he’s not a Trump lackey,” she said. “The idea that Barr is a Trumpophyte is disingenuous. He worked under Bush 41, he’s an experienced attorney …”

“What I don’t understand is: What is the end game?” McCain continued. “Even if Mueller ends up testifying, which is I think an option on the table right now because Democrats are so dissatisfied. The problem, right now, for Democrats is nothing other than impeachment will satisfy. They weren’t satisfied with what was in the Mueller report.”

McCain then ran a clip of Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley, who read aloud from the text messages sent between former Mueller team investigators Peter Strzok and Lisa Page. “I think he echos where conservatives are at,” she explained.

Whoopi Goldberg fired back, claiming that the Trump Tower meeting was the real origin of the Russia probe — and co-host Sunny Hostin argued that it was the firing of former FBI Director James Comey. (RELATED: When Did The Trump-Russia Probe Actually Start?)

McCain turned the conversation back to the text messages, arguing that the appearance of a politically charged FBI was concerning for a lot of Americans.

“Let’s get back to the text messages. When you see the text messages with people that work for the FBI, they’re clearly politicized. There’s a reason for conservatives and Trump supporters to think this is a rigged game,” she said.
